Faith and Identity: A Multifaith Dialogue by LGBTIQA+ and Allies: Casey Multi-Faith Network

Casey Multi-Faith Network, in collaboration with Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council and Casey Rainbow Community, invites you to:

Faith and Identity: A Multifaith Dialogue by LGBTIQA+ and Allies

Date: Thursday 18 May 2023    Time: 6:30pm to 8pm
Location: Cranbourne West Community Hub, 4 Flicka Blvd Cranbourne West, VIC 3977

Do you think that having faith and being LGBTIQA+ are mutually exclusive? Join us for "Faith and Identity," a thought-provoking and inspiring panel discussion including Alushka Rajaram and Nathan Despott that explores the intersection of faith and LGBTIQA+ identity. The panel discussion will be followed by light snacks for attendees and panelists to talk and connect further.

This event seeks to foster understanding, inclusivity, and acceptance. Our diverse panel, featuring individuals from various faith backgrounds, will share their personal journeys, challenges, and insights on reconciling their faith and LGBTIQA+ identity.

Together, we'll explore themes of family values, religious teachings, and community support, aiming to strengthen the multi-faith network within Casey. Don't miss this unique opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue, learn from the experiences of others, and help create a more inclusive and welcoming community for all. All are welcome, regardless of faith or sexual orientation, to join us in this journey of understanding and growth. This event is supported by a City of Casey Community Grant.

Speakers:

Alushka Rajaram: Hails from the shores of the Indian Ocean in South Africa, is a spoken word poet, writer and activist. She is interested in the intersection between culture, faith and queer identity.

Nathan Despott: Growing up in a Catholic Maltese-Australian family in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, Nathan came out when he was 17 but entered the evangelical Christian world at 18. In 2015 he co-founded Brave Network, an LGBTIQA+ support and advocacy group for people from Christian backgrounds and eventually co-led a campaign that saw Victoria pass a world-leading survivor-led ban on conversion practices. He is a research fellow at La Trobe University working on a national conversion practices project focusing on harms and recovery.
