Breaking news or Making News?: A forum about media, race and public debates

Date: Thursday 19 April 2018     Time: 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Breaking news or Making News? aims to facilitate a dialogue between media, communities, advocates and researchers on race and multiculturalism. It will seek to understand how the media approach issues concerning race and multiculturalism and provide a platform for community to share experiences of depictions of race within the media.

Confirmed panellists:

  • Alex Lavelle, Editor with The Age;
  • Zione Walker-Nethenda, lawyer and social entrepreneur;
  • Adel Salman, Vice President, Islamic Council Victoria, and
  • Sarah Abo, SBS reporter and presenter.
  • Other panellists with be announced shortly.

The target audience for this forum will be multicultural and indigenous community representatives, members of the media, as well as advocates and academics.

Through this discussion the three Commissions hope to contribute to a better relationship between media and multicultural communities, and to community harmony and resilience.

Choosing a representative:

  • Your participation, experience and insight would be valuable at the forum and we would like you to nominate representatives to attend.
  • A representative is likely to be someone who has the interest, knowledge and experience in the subject of race and multiculturalism, and media, and is regarded as a leader by their community.

Please know that you may select more than ONE representative to attend but please RSVP by Friday 6 April 2018.
