On Sunday 8 March 2015, the Women’s Interfaith Network (WIN) organized an afternoon of caring and sharing on International Women’s Day. The program, titled 'Healing our Family', was held at the Casey Council Chambers and attended by approximately 100 people.
Partipants at "Healing our Family" Event
The event began with a vegetarian lunch, after which an opening address was presented by Jessie Kaur Singh, Chairperson of WIN Foundation. This was followed by a short prayer offered by a member of each faith representative. Councillor Amanda Stapledon presented the Multifaith Statement which is usually read at the beginning of Council seatings.
Short Prayers by representatives of different faiths
A minute of silence was observed to acknowledge the pain and anguish felt by women globally and for Aunty Walda who is terminally ill. Welcome to Country was done by Luke Gardiner from the Wurrundjeri people of Kulin Nations. Djarrin Blow, grand nephew of Aunty Walda and the late Reg Blow played the yidaki (didgeridoo). All the children were then asked to head downstairs for story telling, arts & Crafts. The guest speaker Dr. Nirmesh Jain - specialist ‘health’ consultant - was introduced by Jamel Singh, project officer of WIN. Dr Jain gave a power-point presentation about the growing need for greater vigilance about keeping good health especially for women due to the onslaught of pollutants globally.
Guests enjoying the Forum
After a traditional tea break, a forum was set up to discuss the important issue of violence within families. What are the key elements needed to keeping the family together and well?
The children presented cards to their mothers and shared their thoughts on “What does a family mean to me?”
Councillor Amanda appreciated the efforts of all organizers and highlighted the role of women in the City of Casey. The evening concluded with a Multi-chant rendition by Dya Singh and his family accompanied by Djarrin Blow on the yidaki.
