On Friday September 14th, around 25 people gathered at the Cobbers statue located at the Shrine of Remembrance, in the beautiful botanical gardens. The Interfaith Prayer Service was in commemoration of for young people who’ve lost their lives to drugs, suicide or neglect.
Being Youth Suicide Awareness week it was an appropriate time to gather, hear prayers from different faith traditions and commemorate those who have been lost. The sculptor of the Cobber statue was present and spoke briefly about the meaning behind the statue - ideals of mateship, compassion and helping those most desperately in need.
Father Bob said, "When I see this, I see the cross." Uncle Reg Blow opened and closed the prayers with a smoking and the deep sounds of didgeridoo. A young muslim, Nasro, shared her own story of being homeless and the struggles she overcame and offered a Muslim prayer. Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish and Christian prayers were also shared.
The power of this intimate interfaith gathering was the positive intentions of everyone present and our wish to come together in prayer and reflection.
