Jews and Christians in the Quran: Who has power over God's bounty
2021 ACU/PISAI Rome Lecture

Date: Thursday 20 May 2021      Time: 8pm to 9pm
Location: Online via registration

The 2021 ACU/PISAI Rome Lecture will be delivered online by Professor Wilhelmus Valkenberg.

About this lecture

Someone who reads the Qur'ān from a Jewish or a Christian perspective is likely to be struck by the special way in which this book seems to show both a great familiarity with, and a severe critque of, these two religions.

Professor Wilhelmus Valkenberg will argue from a close reading that the Qur'ān employs a rejection of tradition-based exclusivism and relies on the argument that God is ever able to bestow God's bounty on whomever God wants. In this, Islam, like Judaism and Christianity, can be understood as wrestling with the combination of commitment and openess, conviction and humility as conditions for interreligious dialogue and comparative theology.

Keynote speaker

Professor Wilhelmus Valkenberg is the Director of the Institute for Interreligious Study an Dialogue, School of Theology and Religious Studies, The Catholic University of America.
