The Council of Christians and Jews invites you to:
"Something Dreadful": Wrestling with the Bible's most troubling texts | The Luncheon Club
Date: Tuesday 12 June 2018 Time: 12:15pm to 1:30pm
Location: East Melbourne Synagogue, 488 Albert Street, East Melbourne
Speaker: Dr Emily Filler
More about the Speaker: Emily is Chair and Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at Earlham College in Indiana, where she teaches modern philosophy and ethics alongside the Jewish textual tradition. A PhD from the University of Virginia, she is particularly interested in the possibility that “troubling texts” – violent or otherwise ethically challenging biblical and rabbinic passages – can be good philosophical, ethical, and political tools. She is co-editor of the Journal of Jewish Ethics and directs the Sacred Texts and Ethics Group at the American Academy of Religion. She is visiting Australia as a guest of Limmud Oz.
“Something dreadful” is a quote from Martin Buber, and this talk will take a detailed look at the passage it is quoted from, and will explore some of the texts that Buber and others consider to be the most terrible and troubling.
Cost: $15 entry, includes Kosher light lunch
