A shared reading of Isaiah 52.13-53.12

Speakers: Dr Mark Brett and Rabbi Allison Conyer discuss ISAIAH 52.13-53.12, a passage traditionally read in churches on Good Friday and interpreted by many Christians as referring to the coming Messiah.

About the speakers: 

  • Dr Mark Brett is Professor of Hebrew Bible at Whitley College, within the Melbourne College of Divinity. He is author of Biblical Criticism in Crisis? (Cambridge 1991) and Genesis: Procreation and the Politics of Identity (Routledge 2000), and editor of Ethnicity and the Bible (Brill 1996/2002). His most recent scholarly articles have focussed on the indigenous origins of Israel and postcolonial biblical studies. He is a deacon at the Collins Street Baptist Church.
  • Rabbi Allison Conyer is Senior Rabbi at Etz Hayim Progressive Synagogue in Bentleigh, with experience in Jewish education, community outreach, counselling, fundraising, outreach to the youth, young adults and young families. She is passionate about scuba diving, acting, bushwalking and camping, as well as social justice, Israel, interfaith dialogue and Jewish growth.
