Today there are 192 member nations and many laws exist to p rotect human rights. Yet millions of people continue to suffer because the ir rights are not respected. Although the Universal Declaration protects t he right to adequate food\, more than 15000 children die of starvation eve ry day. The Declaration also protects the right to free speech\, but thous ands are in prison for saying what they believed to be true. The Declarati on forbids slavery\, but 27 million people live as slaves today &ndash\; m ore than twice the number in the days of the slave trade. And more than a billion people are unable to read\, although the Declaration includes the right to an education.\nThese are very serious abuses of human rights. Yet 90 percent of people are unable to name more than three of their thirty r ights. If more people understood all of them\, more respect would be shown for human rights around the world.
