DESCRIPTION:The Council of Christians and Jews (Victoria) invites you to:\n
In the Footsteps of Spanish Jewry:From 'Golden Age' to National Disaster\n
 Date:&nbsp\;Sunday 15 March 2020&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;Time:&nbsp\;3pm to
 5pmLocation: Danglow Centre\, St Kilda Hebrew Congregation\, 12 Charnwood
Grove\, St Kilda VIC 3182\nIn the minds of her Jewish sons and daughters\,
Spain was a second Jerusalem\, so when the Jews were expelled 1492\, they
thought of themselves as doubly exiled. In modern Jewish historiography\,
the period when Jews lived in Spain under Muslim rule came to be thought
of as a 'Golden Age.' Under subsequent Christian rule\, Jews also enjoyed
economic success and cultural growth. But in 1492\, when Ferdinand and Isa
bella - Spain's most Catholic of monarchs - signed the decree of expulsion
 \, that world disappeared.\nSpeaker:&nbsp\;Paul Forgasz\nAbout the speaker
:&nbsp\;Paul Forgasz’s career has spanned both the secondary and tertiary
sectors of education. For more than a decade he was the Headmaster of the
secondary school campus of Mount Scopus College. He was a lecturer in Jewi
sh history and comparative religion at Monash University’s Australian Cent
re for Jewish Education and also taught Jewish education in the university
’s Faculty of Education. Paul has maintained an active involvement for man
y years in Jewish adult education\, particularly through the Jewish Museum
of Australia's community education program.&nbsp\;Since 2010\, under the
Museum's auspices\, Paul also led a number of sold out Jewish study tours
to various European destinations including Spain\, Italy\, Germany\, Vienn
a\, Poland and Lithuania. In 2020\, he will conduct a first-time study tou
r of Jewish Greece.Using the tour itinerary of Jewish medieval Spain as a
framework\, this illustrated lecture will explore the trajectory of this m
ost fascinating of episodes in the history of the Jewish people. Walking i
n the footsteps of the Jews of medieval Spain\, you will relive the moment
ous events that shaped their lives and destinies\, during the best and wor
st of times.\nCost:&nbsp\;$10 | Kosher afternoon tea\nPlease advise the CC
 J office if you are attending | (03) 9429 5212 |&nbsp\;ccjvic@bigpond.net.

DESCRIPTION:Islamic Council of Victoria invites you to:\nVictorian Mosque O
 pen Day 200\nDate:&nbsp\;Sunday 15 March 2020&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;Time:
10am to 4pmLocation:&nbsp\;Varied Mosques around Victoria (see below)\nWhe
n was the last time you visited your local mosque? Well\, a mosque is not
just a prayer space for Muslims\; it’s also a community space. The “ICV’s
Victorian Mosque Open Day 2020” is the perfect opportunity to discover or
reacquaint yourself with one of the world’s fastest-growing religions! The
Australian Muslim community is gloriously diverse and multicultural – and
Victorian Muslims are proud to celebrate and share this diversity with the
wider public. The VMOD is in conjunction with Harmony Week (March 15-21)
and the lead up to Cultural Diversity Week (March 21 -29) - both of which
are Victoria’s largest multicultural celebrations\, featuring week-long pr
ograms of festivals and events in metropolitan and regional areas. This ye
ar\, the Islamic Council of Victoria’s (ICV) annual Victorian Mosque Open
Day will run in line with both festivals and will see Mosques across Victo
ria open their doors and hearts for visitors from any race\, belief and ge
nder on Sunday\, March 1st between 10 - 4 pm. Everyone is welcome to celeb
rate! The Australian Muslim community is adorned with an estimated 63 diff
erent backgrounds\, and 200\,000 Muslims call Victoria home. The Victorian
Muslim community is diverse with cultural backgrounds from Albania\, Paki
 stan\, Bosnia\, Lebanon\, Burma\, Egypt\, Afghanistan and many more. ICV’s
Victorian Mosque Open Day project launched in 2017 and has become an annu
al hit ever since. Thousands of Victorians have flocked to a local Mosque
near them to get to know their Muslim neighbours\, partaking in guided Mos
que tours\, hijab tutorials\, henna tattoo art\, jumping castles\, sausage
sizzles and discussions about Islamic beliefs. The state-wide annual even
t\, supported by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Victorian Gove
rnment (Office of Multicultural Affairs and Social Cohesion) and Australia
n Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) is back this year partaking in the
community spirit of Cultural Diversity Week and Harmony Day. ICV Presiden
t Mohamed Mohideen said the Victorian Muslim community was proud of its su
ccessful multicultural society\, “sharing our cultural heritage is part of
celebrating what it means to be truly Australian.” “It is about celebrati
ng the benefits of our multicultural society which has come about as a res
ult of the successful integration of migrants into the Australian communit
 y. Victorian Muslims are proud members of that team and we are caring and
sharing people.” 'The best of friends in the sight of Allah (Most High) is
the one who is best to his friend\, and the best of neighbours in the sig
ht of Allah (Most High) is the one who is best to his neighbour.' [at-Tirm
