DESCRIPTION:The Australian Intercultural Society\, Jewish Community Council
of Victoria\, Australian Union of Jewish Students and Benevolence Austral
ia jointly invite you to:\nShowing Up: Bystander Intervention Program | Re
sponding to Islamophobia and Antisemitism\nDate:&nbsp\;Monday 4 February 2
 019&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;&nbsp\;Time:&nbsp\;9:30am to 1pmLocation: Sir Ze
lman Cowen Centre Victoria University\,&nbsp\;295 Queen St\, Melbourne VIC
3000\nIslamophobia and Antisemitism are prominent and serious issues for
many community members across Victoria. Anecdotal and evidence-based repor
ting suggests there has been a steady increase in incidents across Victori
a both in cases reported and indeed in the number of cases which continue
to go unreported. While there are reporting and complaint mechanisms for r
esponding to vilification and abuse based on a person’s religion\, communi
ties experience barriers in responding.\nThis indicates that the majority
of us\, if witness to an antisemitic or Islamophobic incident\, wouldn’t k
now what to do\, and may even feel too scared to intervene and help those
in need. Yet\, past research indicates that bystander approaches were iden
tified as holding promise in the primary prevention of race-based discrimi
nation (2009\, VicHealth &amp\; University of Melbourne).\nAs part of the
Anti-Racism and Anti-Discrimination Action Plan\, the Victorian Government
is supporting key organisations to deliver community-led responses to Isl
amophobia and Antisemitism. This project is a collaborative initiative by
the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV)\, Australian Intercultural
Society (AIS)\, Australian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS) and Benevolenc
e Australia who have formed a united body aimed at addressing these issues
.\nTeaming up with the renowned training organisation Polykala\, for their
experiential leadership programs including ‘Say no to racism’ and their w
ork in diversity and inclusion training.\nThe project aims at empowering p
eople to be active bystanders when confronted with Islamophobia or Antisem
itism\; trained to be confident and tooled-up to take a safe active stance
when observing Antisemitism and Islamophobia.\nDelivered across metropoli
tan Melbourne and regional Victoria\, the half day programs will:\n\nProvi
de community-led responses to Islamophobia and Antisemitism\nSupport peopl
e who have been subjected to Islamophobia and Antisemitism\nSupport bystan
ders to respond to situations\nRaise awareness of issues and promote respe
ctful behaviour and interfaith understanding\n\nThe Official Launch of the
inaugural ‘Showing up: Bystander Intervention program’ training took plac
e on the 10th of December at the Immigraton museum by the Victorian Minist
er for Multicultural Affairs the Hon. Richard Wynne MP. This is an initiat
ive supportive of the VIC State Government.\nThe opening program was a hug
e success and feedback from attendees of the very first training session c
onfirm this. 88% of attendees were satisfied with the overall bystander tr
aining. All of the attendees said that they would 100% recommend this trai
ning to their friends\, colleagues and others.\nSome quotes from participa
nts expressings their feelings were as follows:\n\n‘It was non-intimidatin
 g because it wasn’t role-plays or presenting\, but more group-based’\n‘The
environment felt safe and respectful with the approaches listed were usef
ul and thought provoking’\n‘Both facilitators were fantastic and incredibl
y good at what they do. I liked how the intentions of intervention were de
scribed and broken down into 5 simple steps.’\n\nOverall\, the unanimous s
upport and positive feedback from the inaugural program attendees is anoth
er reason why anyone interested in the Bystander Intervention program shou
ld register to take up this training.\nTo register\,&nbsp\;click&nbsp\;her
