DESCRIPTION:The Australian Intercultural Society\, Jewish Community Council
of Victoria\, Australian Union of Jewish Students and Benevolence Austral
ia jointly invite you to:\nShowing Up: Bystander Intervention Program | Re
sponding to Islamophobia and Antisemitism\nDate: Friday 1 February 2019&nb
 sp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;Time: 9:30am to 1pmLocation: Holocaust Museum\,&nbsp\;
13-15 Selwyn St\, Elsternwick VIC 3185\nIslamophobia and Antisemitism are
prominent and serious issues for many community members across Victoria. A
necdotal and evidence-based reporting suggests there has been a steady inc
rease in incidents across Victoria both in cases reported and indeed in th
e number of cases which continue to go unreported. While there are reporti
ng and complaint mechanisms for responding to vilification and abuse based
  on a person’s religion\, communities experience barriers in responding.\n
This indicates that the majority of us\, if witness to an antisemitic or I
slamophobic incident\, wouldn’t know what to do\, and may even feel too sc
ared to intervene and help those in need. Yet\, past research indicates th
at bystander approaches were identified as holding promise in the primary
prevention of race-based discrimination (2009\, VicHealth &amp\; Universit
y of Melbourne).\nAs part of the Anti-Racism and Anti-Discrimination Actio
n Plan\, the Victorian Government is supporting key organisations to deliv
er community-led responses to Islamophobia and Antisemitism. This project
is a collaborative initiative by the Jewish Community Council of Victoria
(JCCV)\, Australian Intercultural Society (AIS)\, Australian Union of Jewi
sh Students (AUJS) and Benevolence Australia who have formed a united body
aimed at addressing these issues.\nTeaming up with the renowned training
organisation Polykala\, for their experiential leadership programs includi
ng ‘Say no to racism’ and their work in diversity and inclusion training.
\nThe project aims at empowering people to be active bystanders when confr
onted with Islamophobia or Antisemitism\; trained to be confident and tool
ed-up to take a safe active stance when observing Antisemitism and Islamop
hobia.\nDelivered across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria\, th
e half day programs will:\n\nProvide community-led responses to Islamophob
ia and Antisemitism\nSupport people who have been subjected to Islamophobi
a and Antisemitism\nSupport bystanders to respond to situations\nRaise awa
reness of issues and promote respectful behaviour and interfaith understan
ding\n\nThe Official Launch of the inaugural ‘Showing up: Bystander Interv
ention program’ training took place on the 10th of December at the Immigra
ton museum by the Victorian Minister for Multicultural Affairs the Hon. Ri
chard Wynne MP. This is an initiative supportive of the VIC State Governme
nt.\nThe opening program was a huge success and feedback from attendees of
the very first training session confirm this. 88% of attendees were satis
fied with the overall bystander training. All of the attendees said that t
hey would 100% recommend this training to their friends\, colleagues and o
thers.\nSome quotes from participants expressings their feelings were as f
 ollows:\n\n‘It was non-intimidating because it wasn’t role-plays or presen
ting\, but more group-based’\n‘The environment felt safe and respectful wi
th the approaches listed were useful and thought provoking’\n‘Both facilit
ators were fantastic and incredibly good at what they do. I liked how the
intentions of intervention were described and broken down into 5 simple st
eps.’\n\nOverall\, the unanimous support and positive feedback from the in
augural program attendees is another reason why anyone interested in the B
ystander Intervention program should register to take up this training.\n&
