The Challenge of Extremism: Australian Intercultural Society

Australian Intercultural Society invites you to:

The Challenge of Extremism

Date: Wednesday 29 May 2019    Time: 5:30pm to 7:30pm
Location: 441 Saint Kilda Road, Melbourne, VIC 3004

Right-wing extremism, hate speech and Islamophobia are on the rise. The need to answer the threat to our multicultural democracy has been made more urgent by the recent devastating massacre in Christchurch, New Zealand.

What can be done to answer this challenge and build cross-cultural empathy and understanding? And what is the role of the media?

The Melbourne Press Club, in partnership with the Australian Intercultural Society, would like to welcome you to join us for iftar – a meal after sunset to break the daily Ramadan fast – followed by a forum discussion with:

Tasneem Chopra, author, activist and chair of the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights
Greg Barton, professor and Chair in Global Islamic Politics at Deakin University
Ahmed Hassan, multicultural community worker and Youth Activating Youth director

The discussion will be moderated by Sushi Das, author and chief of staff at RMIT ABC Fact Check.

Cost: $30, includes iftar buffet meal

Bookings: Eventbrite | RSVP: Monday 20 May 2018
